The free advice!

image

The one thing that you could get free, anytime, without a doubt is, advice. You could be a small kid wandering around, enjoying the beauty of life or a person with more days to his age than knowledge. Fear not, you would get at least a handful of them for sure.

Being on the receiving end of advice is the most hated job universally, while dishing them out seems to be the easiest and most preferred job for the majority of population.

Whenever I get myself lost in pondering over the concept of advising, this little story pops up somewhere in the process. Here’s that story.

Once a mother approached a person, considered as some sort of inspiring leader or guru, with her child. She asked him to tell her kid to reduce the sweets intake of the kid. The guru simply asked her to come and visit after a week. Though perplexed, she left silently and met him after a week.

He said to the kid, “Dear one, listen to your mom and don’t eat too much sweets. It is not good for your health” The mother wondered why he needed a week to say this. He could have said the same past week itself, is what she thought.

The guru answered the unasked question clear in her face. “Till last week, I too was eating way too many sweets and I hadn’t controlled myself on that simple desire. During this week, I reduced the sweets I eat and now I know, it is possible to control the desire. That is why I needed a week to know, what I’m going to advice is actually practical.”

This story eventually reminds me of this couplet.

சொல்லுதல் யார்க்கும் எளிய அரியவாம்
சொல்லிய வண்ணம் செயல். (664)

Transliteration:
solludhal yaarkkum eLiya ariyavaam
solliya vaNNam seyal

Translation:
Easy it is, to say; rare it is,
the ability to do what one says.
[Couplet 664]

After all that is said above, I’m not advising, but just wondering, How beautiful and peaceful the world would be, If everyone started following their own advices. There would be lot lesser absurd advices and lots more of near perfect people.

Still I could and mostly I would zip up my mouth when one of those free advice tries to spill out, when I can’t live through them myself. That is for two reasons. One, it’s not my place to say them without walking in your shoes. Two, I’ve got holes to be mended in my shoes and I’ll go attend to them, pronto.

    1. 🙂 I meant the translation, not my line… “easy it is… to say… rare it is…” 😀
Anyway, who knows… Yoda might actually be a Tamilian prince like Bodhidharma and might actually mean Yodha… in which case the translation is quite apt.

    2. Hahaha.. Rofl.. Yoda, a prince.. 😀 of course who knows.. He might have been.. 😉 Now shall we go in search for the survivors in his lineage.. 😛

Yeah, I missed the link to translation.. Thanks for pointing it.. Now I’m also wondering whether the translator is a big fan of Yoda.. 😉

  1. I love the ‘holes in the shoe’ metaphor. You are right, advice is always floating about, either through some one else or through us. Reminds me of the time, I was a new mother….I got so much advice regarding how to bring up a child from parents, siblings, relatives, friends, strangers that I was fed up. I just realised that now I do the same 😀

    1. That would be rude to say so directly.. But don’t you worry.. I’ll not bother so much about being nice and would tell you when it gets boring, during our long chat over coffee.. 😀 But I highly doubt that you would bore me.. 😉

  2. Wow… Well written.. Advice is always easy to give, but ad-wise is always difficult to give. Because saying is easy, but to implement them is really tough. And I like that story about mother, son and guru story. Practically doable advice is very important.. Well done. Have a great day.. 🙂

    1. Thanks for sharing that nice quote and it reminded me of this..
When you toss a coin, in the fraction of second, the coin is flipping, you realise the answer to the question.. 🙂

  3. When I first heard that story about the sweets it was attributed to Gandhi. It made a powerful mark on me and I remember it often.

In general I believe people should ask if others want to hear their advice before they give it. That way the listener has the opportunity to say no. A blog is different. There is no opportunity to ask, and people have a choice what blogs they want to read.

    I enjoy reading your opinions.

    1. I have heard that version as well as another version attributed to Mohammed Nabi.. So I generalised it.. 😉

I agree with you on giving option to say no.

Thank you so much for your kind words. They really help me in moving forward.. Thanks again.. 🙂

    2. With a delicate use of the English Language, one needs never to offer advice (unless asked for of course), but one can always offer suggestions. There is a distinct difference. If I give you advice, I am telling you what I would do in your circumstances. If I offer suggestions, then I am giving you some options for you to consider. There is a huge difference.

    3. I just reread this post and my response at that time. Most of it would be the same if I was responding now. One part I would say differently is that I generally avoid giving unasked for advice, even on blogs. Usually I ask bloggers if they want to hear suggestions if I have some to give.
