To Friendship!

Today’s post is a dedication to the beautiful relationship called #Friendship. The following is the poetry written by Bharathi and could be set as the benchmark for friendship! This is one my all time favourites and what better time to share it than while the friendship day is around the corner.. 😉

Bharathiyaar is very fond of Kannan and he has created songs on Kannan as his friend, father, mother, servant, King, Disciple, Guru, Child, Playful Kid, Lover, Ruler and of course God. And when he wanted to sing him as his lady-love, Kannan became Kannamma.

Though many could wish for Kannan to be a dear friend, who else, other than Arjunan, could claim the pleasure of relishing his friendship almost at all stages of his life? Hence, Bharathi has placed himself in the place of Arjunan to sing about Kannan as a friend.

1. பொன்னவிர் மேனிச் சுபத்திரை மாதைப்
 புறங்கொண்டு போவ தற்கே - இனி
 என்ன வழியென்று கேட்கில், உபாயம்
 இருகணத் தேயுரைப் பான்; - அந்தக்
 கன்னன் வில்லாளர் தலைவனைக் கொன்றிடக்
 காணும் வழியொன் றில்லேன் - வந்திங்கு
 உன்னை யடைந்தேன் என்னில் உபாயம்
 ஒருகணத் தேயுரைப் பான்.

When asked, what is the way to take away Subathrai¹,
the one with golden glowing skin, he would
offer a solution in two moments;
When said, I don’t see a possible way
to kill Karnan, the archer’s leader,
I’ve come in surrender to you,
he would offer solution, in a moment².

2. கானகத்தே சுற்று நாளிலும் நெஞ்சிற்
 கலக்க மிலாதுசெய் வான்; - பெருஞ்
 சேனைத் தலைநின்று போர்செய்யும் போதினில்
 தேர்நடத் திக்கொடுப் பான்; - என்றன்
 ஊனை வருத்திடு நோய்வரும் போதினில்
 உற்ற மருந்துசொல் வான்;- நெஞ்சம்
 ஈனக் கவலைக ளெய்திடும் போதில்
 இதஞ்சொல்லி மாற்றிடு வான்;

Even on the days of wandering the forests,
He would make sure the heart is without fear; –
While fighting war as the chief general for a big army,
He would come as the chauffeur for the chariot;
While suffering from ailments to body,
He would suggest appropriate medicine;
While the heart gets disheartened from worries,
He consoles with soothing words;

3. பிழைக்கும் வழிசொல்ல வேண்டுமென் றாலொரு
 பேச்சினி லேசொல்லு வான்;
 உழைக்கும் வழிவினை யாளும் வழிபயன்
 உண்ணும் வழியுரைப் பான்;
 அழைக்கும் பொழுதினிற் போக்குச் சொல்லாமல்
 அரைநொடிக் குள்வரு வான்;
 மழைக்குக் குடை, பசி நேரத் துணவென்றன்
 வாழ்வினுக் கெங்கள்கண்ணன்;

When asked to say the way to survive,
he would reply in a single breath / immediately;
He would say the way to earn, the way to face consequences,
the way to consume (enjoy / reap) benefits;
When called for, without giving excuses,
He would come within half a moment;
Like the umbrella for rain, like the food at time of hunger,
Such is our Kannan for our lives;

4. கேட்டபொழுதில் பொருள் கொடுப்பான்; சொல்லுங்
 கேலி பொறுத்திடு வான்; எனை
 ஆட்டங்கள் காட்டியும் பாட்டுக்கள் பாடியும்
 ஆறுதல் செய்திடு வான்; - என்றன்
 நாட்டத்திற் கொண்ட குறிப்பினை இஃதென்று
 நான்சொல்லும் முன்னுணர் வான்; அன்பர்
 கூட்டத்தி லேயிந்தக் கண்ணனைப் போலன்பு
 கொண்டவர் வேறுள ரோ?

When asked He gives money / material immediately;
He tolerates the silly pranks made upon him;
He consoles / cheers me by playing games / acts,
And by singing songs;
He realises my desires and interests that amuse me,
even before I give away any hints;
Among the affectionate crowd, is there any one else
whose affection is like that of Kannan?

5. உள்ளத்தி லேகரு வங்கொண்ட போதினில்
 ஓங்கி யடித் திடுவான்; நெஞ்சில்
 கள்ளத்தைக் கொண்டொரு வார்த்தைசொன் னாலங்கு
 காறி யுமிழ்ந்திட வான்; சிறு
 பள்ளத்தி லேநெடு நாள்ழு குங்கெட்ட
 பாசியை யெற்றி விடும் - பெரு
 வெள்ளத்தைப் போலருள் வார்த்தைகள் சொல்லி
 மெலிவு தவிர்த்திடு வான்.

When a thought of jealousy springs
in the heart, He trashes it with force;
While uttering a word with guilty intent,
He would demean by spitting out with vehemence;
The small dent that stagnated water
for many days has stinking fungus,
it is cleanly washed away in the big flood.
Likewise, he says blessed words to rid off the weariness.

6. சின்னக் குழந்தைகள் போல்விளை யாடிச்
 சிரித்துக் களித்திடு வான்; நல்ல
 வன்ன மகளிர் வசப்பட வேபல
 மாயங்கள் சூழ்ந்திடு வான்; அவன்
 சொன்ன படி நடவாவிடி லோமிகத்
 தொல்லை யிழைத்திடு வான்; கண்ணன்
 தன்னை யிழந்து விடில், ஐயகோ! பின்
 சகத்தினில் வாழ்வதி லேன்.

Like small kids, He would play games,
laugh and enjoy; To mesmerize
the good and beautiful damsels,
He would plan tricks and enforce;
If His words are not followed,
He would cause multiple problems;
(Yet,) If I were to ever lose him,
Oh gosh! I wouldn’t live on earth after that.

7. கோபத்தி லெயொரு சொல்லிற் சிரித்துக்
 குலுங்கிடச் செய்திடு வான்; மனஸ்
 தாபத்திலே யொன்று செய்து மகிழ்ச்சி
 தழைத்திடச் செய்திடு வான்; பெரும்
 ஆபத்தி னில்வந்து பக்கத்தி லேநின்று
 அதனை விலக்கிடு வான்; சுடர்த்
 தீபத்தி லேவிழும் பூச்சிகள் போல்வருந்
 தீமைகள் கொன்றிடு வான்.

While I am angry, he would say just the word
to make me roll with laughter;
While I am forlorn, he would do something
that cheers and cherishes happiness; In times of big danger,
he would come stand beside and remove the danger;
Like the moths that fall into flame (and die),
he would kill away the evil that comes forth.

8. உண்மை தவறி நடப்பவர் தம்மை
 உதைத்து நசுக்கிடுவான்; அருள்
 வண்மையி னாலவன் மாத்திரம் பொய்கள்
 மலைமலை யாவுரைப் பான்; நல்ல
 பெண்மைக் குணமுடையான்; சில நேரத்தில்
 பித்தர் குணமுடை யான்; மிகத்
 தண்மைக் குணமுடை யான் சில நேரம்
 தழலின் குணமுடை யான்.

He would thrash and trample those people
who fall astray in their ways from the truth;
But still with His power and grace,
He would keep telling lies by heaps and bounds;
He has the characteristics of good feminine; Sometimes,
He has the characteristics of madman;
He has the characteristics of tenderness; Sometimes,
He has the characteristics of burning fire.

9. கொல்லுங் கொலைக்கஞ்சி டாத மறவர்
 குணமிகத் தானுடை யான்; கண்ணன்
 சொல்லு மொழிகள் குழந்தைகள் போலொரு
 சூதறி யாதுசொல் வான்; என்றும்
 நல்லவ ருக்கொரு தீங்கு நண்ணாது
 நயமுறக் காத்திடு வான்; கண்ணன்
 அல்லவ ருக்கு விடத்தினில் நோயில்
 அழலினி லுங்கொடி யான்.

He has much the characteristics of a warrior
who isn’t afraid to kill;
The words he utters are like that
of children without any guile;
He would skilfully deter the evil
from affecting good people at any time;
Though to others (who aren’t good people), like the poison Kannan is
intimidating even more than the blaze of disease.

10. காதல் விளைய மயக்கிடும் பாட்டினில்
 கண்மகிழ் சித்திரத் தில் - பகை
 மோதும் படைத்தொழில் யாவினு மேதிறம்
 முற்றிய பண்டிதன் காண்; உயர்
 வேத முணர்ந்த முனிவ ருணர்வினில்
 மேவு பரம்பொருள் காண்; நல்ல
 கீதை யுரைத்தெனை இன்புறச் செய்தவன்
 கீர்த்திகள் வாழ்த்திடுவேன்.

In the mesmerizing songs that cultivates love,
In the art that is pleasurable to the eyes
In the profession of war against enmity,
He is a highly skilled pundit, See;
In the senses of the sages, who have understood
the highly holy scriptures, He is the almighty, See;
By professing the good Gita,
he had made me attain happiness, (hence,)
I’ll sing praises of his victories.

[¹Subathrai is the sister of Kannan, who got married to Arjunan
²As a friend, he gives suggestions after thinking through for two moments, when asked to take away lady-love, whereas he gives them in just one moment, when asked to help in going for war to defeat the enemy.]
